EXERCISE-INDUCED HEAT SHOCK PROTEIN (HSP70) RESPONSE IN HUMAN SKELETAL MUSCLE AND LEUKOCYTES

Abstract
Heat shock proteins (HSPs) represent a family of highly conserved stress proteins found in all organisms from bacteria to humans. There is also substantial evidence that induction of HSPs synthesis occurs in vivo in response to a variety of physiologically relevant stressors, such as exercise, hyperthermia, oxidative stress, and other metabolic insults. The main aim of this review was to discuss the family of 70kDa heat shock proteins (HSP70), their structure and functions as well as the regulation of their expression in human skeletal muscle and leukocytes in response to exercise.

THE INFLUENCE OF YOGA EXERCISES ON WOMEN’S ANXIETY LEVELS

Abstract
The aim of the study was to define the influence of one-time yoga exercises on the level of anxiety in three measurements (at the beginning of systematic training, after three and then after six months of the training) and the factors that determine them.
Material and Methods: The research was conducted on 16 women at the age of 20 to 26. The researchers made use of the state anxiety level scales from Spielberger’s STAI questionnaire, as well as the standard psychological questionnaires (NEO-FFI, CISS, SOC-29).
Results: A considerable decrease in anxiety level was noted after one-time yoga classes in all three measurements.
In the first measurement it correlates with the levels of mood state of the subjects, and can be prognosed on the basis of these levels. In the two following measurements correlations were noted with openness to experience and with the sense of comprehensibility.
Conclusions: The little size of the group of subjects limits the possibility of generalising the results of the research.
One-time yoga exercises may cause a considerable decrease in young women’s anxiety level, and the anti-anxiety effects are probably diversified according to the initial anxiety level and the personality traits of the subjects.

CONSERVATIVE MANAGEMENT OF THE THORACIC OUTLET COMPRESSION SYNDROME

Abstract
Aim of the study: To assess the results of sports rehabilitation of patients suffering from thoracic outlet compression syndrome.
Material and methods: Participants of the study were 12 patients of the Vascular, General and Transplantation Surgery Clinic, treated for thoracic outlet compression syndrome (TOS). Only patients of asthenic build , without bone or fibro-gristle anomalies in the thoracic outlet region were qualified for surgery. The syndrome was detected clinically by applying provocative maneuvers as modified by Lang test, together with non-invasive imagining (ultrasonography Duplex-Doppler). The same procedures were used when evaluating rehabilitation effects. The pre-and post-treatment functions of upper extremity were assessed from DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) questionnaire. The patients were qualified for conservative therapy consisting mainly of exercises strengthening the shoulder girdle muscles. The objective of rehabilitation was reduction or elimination of pressure on the branchial plexus, and on subclavian artery and vein, jammed between the first rib and clavicle.
Results and conclusions: The incidence of positive provocative maneuvers were reduced by Lang-test. Total improvement of the blood flow in subclavian artery was demonstrated in by Duplex-Doppler imaging. The majority of patients exhibited full functional recovery of upper extremity in DASH scale. It was concluded that application of rehabilitation exercises to patients with thoracic outlet compression syndrome offered them chance to avoid surgery.

COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES IN THE MANAGEMENT OF CANCER TREATMENT-RELATED SYMPTOMS: THE INDIVIDUALIZED PRESCRIPTIVE EXERCISE INTERVENTION APPROACH

Abstract
The immediate and residual side effects associated with cancer treatments have increasingly gained attention. The medical community is now recognizing the importance that complementary therapies play in mitigating side effects of cancer treatments. The prevalent side effects of fatigue, cachexia, depression, nausea, and dyspnea decrease the functionality of patients, prolong recovery time, and diminish the overall quality of life. The correlated decrease in metabolic, cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological and musculoskeletal efficiency can account for such symptoms. While many of these symptoms are treated with pharmacological therapies, which provide in the majority of the cases only temporary relief to patients, prescriptive exercise is a promising therapy in complementing such strategies. Research has shown that when exercise is administered prior, during, and post cancer treatment, patients demonstrate significant decreases in fatigue, improvements in strength and endurance, conservation of muscle mass, improved metabolism, improved sleeping and eating patterns, and enhanced quality of life. The purpose of this article is to address the use of exercise as a complementary therapy in the management of cancer treatment-related symptoms. Also, a brief review on current empirical evidence on the benefits of exercise for cancer patients, a section on how to utilize exercise safely and effectively, the combination of exercise and recreation therapy as another promising approach, and recommendations for future research are included in this article. Exercise is widely accepted as a preventative, rehabilitative, and recuperative intervention for cardiovascular, pulmonary, orthopedic and endocrine diseases and it should now be considered so for cancer.

ULTRADIAN COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES FOR ASSESSING BODY COMPONENTS IN ATHLETES – SKINFOLD MEASUREMENTS, CIRCUMFERENCES, NEAR INFRARED INTERACTANCE, AND BIOIMPEDANCE ANALYSIS

Abstract
The aim of the study: Four techniques are compared for estimating body composition in young athletes analysing diurnal changes.
Material and methods: In 24 young healthy athletes, body components (body fat percentage, % FM; percent lean body mass, % LBM, and total body water percentage, %TBW) were measured thrice from 7:25 a.m. to 7:22 p.m, using three-site skinfold measurements (SKF), circumference measurement (CIR), near infrared interactance (NIR), and bioimpedance analysis (BIA).
Results: SKF, CIR, NIR and BIA methods were compared with each other. There were significant differences in the % FM values among the four methods with the SKF method providing the lowest % FM and the CIR method the highest values (p<0.001, Friedman test). Ultradian changes in % FM were significant when measurements were performed with SKF (p<0.028) or with BIA (p<0.002). Ultradian changes in %FM from morning to evening showed significant decreases using SKF (p<0.05) and significant increases using BIA (p<0,01). No ultradian changes in % FM were observed by use of the CIR and NIR methods (p>0.05).
Conclusions: For young athletes, the application of NIR for the determination of % FM is less affected by daily changes in hydration level than the other methods. NIR and SKF techniques provide the most comparative measures. For the detection of changes in fluid balance, BIA might be the most appropriate one.
