ESTIMATION OF THE TOTAL TESTOSTERONE, SEX HORMONES BINDING GLOBULINE (SHBG), DEHYDROEPIANDROSTERONE SULPHATE (DHEA-S) AND CORISOL DURING TRAINING MEZOCYCLES IN BASKETBALL PLAYERS

Abstract
Introduction: Interpretation of various reports on hormonal changes accompanying training cycle is difficult. Due to differences in training loads it is often impossible to compare obtained results. There is little data on changes of endocrine parameters in elite sportsmen undergoing long-term and high-intensity training.
Aim of the study: The aim of the present study was to investigate serum concentrations of gonadal and adrenal steroids in three consecutive training mezocycles. Hormones (total testosterone, DHEA-S, cortisol) were evaluated before the first mezocycle and after each of the following three mezocycles.
Methods: Twelve professional basketball players were recruited for the study. They were preparing for the play-off round of the national basketball championship.
In the mezocycle I the training load was increased. In comparison to the baseline, total testosterone decreased from 31,2 to 19,9 nmol/l, DHEA-S from 264,5 to 214,5 nmol/l and FAI from 110,0 to 57,6 , while cortisole and SHBG did not change.
In the mezocycle II the exercise load was reduced. In comparison to the first mezocycle, concentrations of total testosterone increased from 19 to 29 nmol/l , cortisol from 497,2 to 664,5 nmol/l and FAI from 57 to 135, while DHEA-S and SHBG did not change.
In the mezocycle III the training load was increased anew. This time total testosterone decreased from 29 to 20 nmol/l, DHEA-S from 220,1 to 160,5 nmol/l and cortisol from 664,2 to 524,1 nmol/l in comparison to the second mezocycle.
Results: Overall, after three months of training: total testosterone decreased by 35%, DHEA-S by 39% and FAI by 19% when compared with baseline values.
Conclusion: We conclude that professional training significantly affects endocrine status of elite athletes.

EFFECT OF ONE-YEAR DUTY AS GOLF CADDIE ON AEROBIC CAPACITY AND BONE HEALTH IN PREMENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether intermittent, vigorous walking as a golf caddie for one year would increase aerobic work capacity (VO2pk) and bone health in healthy premenopausal women. Changes in 8 newcomer golf caddies (GC) were compared with 8 age-matched sedentary office workers (CO), age range: 34-47 yr. GC walked briskly and jogged =30% of the time, while covering 18 holes/day for 3-5 days/week. A digital pedometer recorded daily walking steps. GC averaged 20,487 steps/day while on duty (76 steps/min for 4.5 hr) and 6,374 steps/day during off-duty days, while CO averaged 5,388 steps/day. VO2pk, O2pulse and VO2 at the double product break point as percent of pk, measured on cycle ergometer, increased significantly over 12 months in GC but not in CO, with significant differences between groups. Calcaneal bone stiffness index measured by ultrasound densitometry, increased significantly by 5% in GC after 12 months, mostly in the last 6 months, with no change in CO. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in total hip and lumbar spine in 6 subjects from each group. Hip BMD increased significantly in GC after 12 months, significantly more than the small change in CO, and spine BMD showed similar, but nonsignificant trends, averaging 6 and 12 months. It is concluded that regular, brisk, intermittent walking for one year by healthy premenopausal women is sufficient exercise to increase cardiorespiratory fitness and improve calcaneal and hip bone health.

EFFECT OF TRAINING ON BLOOD LACTATE RESPONSES TO SIMULATED 500 M AND 2000 M ROWING IN SCHOOLBOY ROWERS

Introduction. Elite rowers are characterized by high post-exercise blood lactate in response to both simulating and competitive 2000 m distance. However, data concerning training response of blood lactate levels in schoolboy rowers are not available.
Aim of the study. This study was aimed at evaluation of post-exercise blood lactate in adolescent rowers following 500 m and 2000 m distance in two periods of year a training cycle – in March and in June.
Methods. A total of 6 schoolboy rowers volunteered to participate in the study after receiving parental consent. All the subjects performed 500 m and 2000 m all out simulated rowing using the Concept II ergometer (Concept, Vermont, USA). Peak and mean power output, and maximal heart rate were registered during both tests. Lactate was measured colorimetrically in capillary blood immediately after exercise and 3, 5 and 7 min after exercise using Dr Lange commercial kits.
Results. Maximal heart rate, maximal and mean power output did not differ in March and June. In June blood lactate levels following both 500 m and 2000 m distances did not differ in comparison with March. In contrast, total lactate (expressed as sum of lactate levels) and peak blood lactate levels following 500 m and 2000 m distances were markedly lower in June than in March.
Conclusion. Training performed between March and June did not affect power output during simulated 500 m and 2000 m rowing, however depressed blood lactate accumulation. Thus, similar mechanical work was achieved with less metabolic stress.

EFFECT OF CALCIUM INTAKE ON BONE PARAMETERS IN WOMEN TRAINING AND NOT-TRAINING IN THE PAST BEING IN THE POSTMENOPAUSAL PERIOD

Abstract
The study was aimed at evaluating the effect of the current intake of calcium on the level of bone parameters of women being in the postmenopausal period. The study involved 51 women aged from 50 to 62 years, including 32 former sportswomen and 19 women who did not practice any sports in the past. Bone mineralization (BMC) and density (BMD) were determined in the lumbar region of the spine (L2-L4) with the DEXA method, whereas bone strength (Stiffness coefficient) in the calcaneal bone with the ultrasonic method. The nutritional pattern (calcium intake) was assessed based on three 24-hour dietary recalls, with the use of a software based on nutritional tables.
The analysis of the results obtained demonstrated that ca. 19% of the former sportswomen consumed calcium in a deficient amount, i.e. below 67% of the safe level of intake, whereas in the case of the women not practicing sports in the past it referred to 42% of the examined. The mean values of BMC and BMD were lower in the women with deficient intake of calcium (below 2/3 of the safe level of intake) compared to the other women, i.e. by 12% and 9% (former sportswomen) and by ca. 4% and 7% (control group). It was also demonstrated that in women characterized by the proper intake of calcium the mean value of the Stiffness coefficient was higher by 6% (former sportswomen) and by 9% (control group).
The results obtained enable concluding that there exists a relationship between calcium intake by the women examined and the bone parameters analyzed.

AORTIC ANEURYSM IN ATHLETES – THE SERIOUS DIAGNOSTIC ET THERAPEUTIC PROBLEM

Abstract
The aortic aneurysm is the pathology, which can lead to a sudden death caused by rupture or wall dissection during the physical effort. This disease should be excluded during the initial and periodic examinations of the sportsman. It could be done by patient's family history interview and imaging examinations. People genetically endangered should not perform any hard training. They ought to be under systematic medical control for monitoring and qualification to the surgery in the exact moment. The aortic aneurysms are treated only by open or endovascular surgery. The classical open method consist of implantation of the vascular prosthesis in place of aneurysm. It's very risk-full and can be followed by many complications. The aim of endovascular technique is an implantation of the stent-graft through the peripheral artery. It is less demanding and safer method but still requires further long-term evaluation.
