PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND ADIPOKINES SECRETION IN OBESITY TREATMENT

Obesity is a major epidemiological as well as clinical problem worldwide. It is among the most important reasons of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Burden of obesity results mainly from disturbed secretory function of adipose tissue. It is currently known that adipose tissue in not merely a storage of energy excess in the form of triglycerides but an important endocrine organ, secreting several biologically active substances named in common adipokines. In obesity secretion of adipokines is disordered. Successful treatment of obesity is not just achievement of weight loss but normalization of metabolism, reduction of other risk factors and restoration of advantageous profile of adipokines. Importance and effectiveness of regular physical activity in antiobesity therapy is unquestionable. It is interesting therefore, to find out how physical activity influences adipokines concentrations. In this review an effort was made to summarize current knowledge about influence of physical activity on adipokines.

INFLUENCE OF ULTRA LONG EXERCISE AND SLEEP DEPRIVATION ON PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE OF HEALTHY MEN

In contrast to the well known influence of isolated effects of long lasting exercise and sleep deprivation on physical performance there are few data on effect of those factors combined.
Aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of 36 hours of exercise and sleep deprivation on selected physiological factors.
Materials and methods. The study was conducted on 11 healthy volunteers at survival camp (age 19±1 (SE) yrs, BMI 21.5±0.7 kg·m-2, VO2max 55±2 ml·kg·min-1). Entry measurements were done the day before the trial: posturography, reocardiography in horizontal position and submaximal exercise test (workload increased by 50W every 3 min to 200W). First day of the trial started at 6 AM with gymnastics, followed by running and cycling; overnight there was a mountain trekking lasting 9 hrs; on the second day there was a military training and cycling. The final measurements took place after dinner after 36 hrs without sleep and 24 hrs of exercise of various intensity. Posturography was also performed at 6 AM on the second day.
Results. In posturography significant decrease in the sway area with feedback and no changes in maximal sway were recorded. In the final measurements there were significantly lower heart rates at all submaximal workloads (p<0.001) and lower rates of perceived exertion on Borg`s scale at 50 and 100W (p<0.05). In reocardiography there were no significant changes, but a tendency for an increased stroke volume in the final measurement.
Conclusion. In young men participating in the study one sleepless night combined with the long lasting exercise caused decrease in heart rate during submaximal exercise, which can be a result of adaptation to adrenergic stimulation.

INFLUENCE OF MAXIMAL EXERCISE ON ORGANISM’S ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIAL IN FIELD HOCKEY PLAYERS

56 field hockey players from Poznan field hockey clubs were investigated. Sportsmen, running on motorised treadmill performed a maximal incremental exercise test. Physiological parameters were examined on wireless portable ergospirometry system. In blood plasma we determined lactic acid and plasma antioxidant parameters (FRAP, total polyphenols, TBARS and allantoin). The tests showed that field hockey players have a high oxygen efficiency and high tolerance to effects of free radicals.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT AND A SPORT INJURY SITUATION

The purpose of this article is to outline general issues of practical aspects of sport psychology and show a model of psychological effect in case of injury. Significance and value of sport psychology are evaluated mainly by its enhancive impact on performance efficiency. Principal concerns are: breaking personal competence barriers, achieving better results, managing stress situation etc. Main focus of psychological activity is to effect one’s efficacy in sport performance. However, it does not mean that psychologist’s work is limited to sport competition only. The results of good psychological training do not only have immediate connotation. They can be perceived after competitions and in non-sport related situations. An exemplary situation is one directly linked to sport activity, but consequences are experienced out of sport arena-namely sport injury and its treatment. Serious injury is a traumatic experience for an athlete and can turn into the cause of various frustrations. Consequences can be very extensive: from problems to attain previous level of performance up to ‘sport death’. Psychological support program is based on three pillars: education, social support and mental training. Skills acquired during psychological training become useful in rehabilitation. They can both bolster and facilitate recovery itself and ensure a faster and improved return to sport. Accurate psychological intervention should result in athlete’ s self reliance. The effects of which go beyond ‘now and here’ situation, or even further than sport.

NEW PERSPECTIVES AND CHALLENGES: SPORT PERFORMANCE OF MIDDLE AGE AND ELDERLY WOMEN

Introduction. Through most of the XX century women participation in sport was considerably restricted. The strongest restrictions considered the variety of endurance sports due to beliefs that endurance efforts are of particular threat to woman’s health, especially to maternal functions.
Materials and methods. In the study it was assumed that at the present level of knowledge, the fullest and most objective criterion for the assessment of possibilities of a human body subjected to intensive and long-lasting sport effort is the level of achieved results. Therefore, the basic material used in the study is information about women’s age and the level of women’s results in endurance sports.
Results. While the analysis of results achieved by women do not give sufficient basis for establishing optimal age limits from which individual sports, including endurance sports, can be taken up, it brings into the light previously unknown potential of women to achieve good sports results in long-lasting efforts both in their forties and later decades of life (even in their seventies).
Conclusions. The presented results have a important cognitive value. Along with a significant contribution to the theory of sport training the results also provide a new perspective to a more general issue of the role of physical activity involving endurance efforts in preserving health of middle-age and elderly women, in particular in fighting obesity and illnesses related to it.

BIOLOGICAL RENEWAL IN TEN-PIN BOWLING

The ten-pin bowling as a game was known in antiquity but its progress and popularity were increased in the 19th century in the USA. Sportive ten-pin bowling is classified into different, male and female kinds of competitions, and the competitive systems are played individually and in teams on the special alleys. Training education in ten-pin bowling is based on the long-term process divided into the particular training periods: preparatory, starting and transitory period. Only the knowingly planned and carefully executed training process could lead to the significant national and international achievements.
The ten-pin bowling is characterized by the typical speed and weight effort. Multiple of repeated throwing during the training and competitions with the unilateral structure of movements evokes the occurrence of overloads localized in strictly defined places of the locomotor system. In this sport the most frequent injuries caused by overloads changes are observed in the joints of upper limbs, to a minor extend – in trunk or lower limbs.
Planning of the supporting restitution and the prophylactic of the overload injuries in bowlers should be connected with the qualification of potential competitor to this particular sport discipline, appliance of the right training loads, hygienic way of life as well as the widely meant biological renewal.

CARDIO-VASCULAR REACTION AFTER EXERCISE TEST AND SELECTED PARAMETERS OF HEART RATE VARIABILITY

Physical activity makes human body not only physically skilled but also effects efficiency of autonomic cardio-vascular regulation.
The aim of our investigation was to check up the dependence between a type of cardiovascular reaction after exercise test and some selected parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) analysed during orthostatic test.
Materials and methods. The examination included 33 healthy men aged 19 – 20 years. Martinett exercise test was performed and a type of circulatory reaction was defined on the basis of blood pressure and heart rate measurments. According to the results, the participants of the examination were divided into 3 groups in relation to time of circulatory restitution.
Results. In each group analysis of selected parameters of HRV during orthostatic test was done estimating the index of sympathetic-parasympathetic balance (LF/HF) and the triangular index (TINN).
Conclusions. Our investigations indicate that in healthy men with shorter time of circulatory restitution after physical test more favourable state of autonomic regulation was observed and HRV analysis can be a supplement to estimation of biological renewal in sport.
